Off Grid Living: Backup Generators

Off-Grid Living – Backup Generators Video –  Transcript: good morning everybody in the view it’s a cool but gorgeous day here in the mountains of Colorado let me show you our generator system today so backup generators are very important because it’s nice as solar and wind are you still got to have a backup system sometimes they just don’t the Sun doesn’t shine enough for the wind doesn’t blow enough so we have this generator here this is a Kohler it is 14 kilowatt generator this generator ran us about I want to say about four thousand dollars and then I had somebody install it for me because it was something that I didn’t want to get into an installation was about fifteen hundred dollars so this will automatically kick on if our batteries ever reach a certain level so it’s an there’s a module in our inverter which I can show you called an all automatic generator start that’s this guy right here so that will kick on a generator if our battery reaches if our battery levels get too low and I showed you our battery levels in a previous video let me show you that again this is our battery level right here it’s twenty six point eight so we have a 24 volt system that’s a nominal which means that’s just what it’s called so when it’s actually fall out it’s gonna be twenty four point seven it’ll be 25 or so you can see we’re getting up into 26 as you get up in the twenty-seven 28 Volt range these charge controllers were actually start dumping charge either into the ground or they’ll start varying amperage and voltage so that we don’t over charge the batteries you ruin your batteries if you overcharge them so the generator serves the purpose obviously of being backup power but it also serves a purpose of equalizing the battery bank showed you the battery bank in a previous video but what can happen with these strings is that they can have various charges over various strings they also build up some mineralization on the plates inside see if I can show you inside here there’s plates in there that actually store the energy in the fluid I’m not gonna get into the chemical process of batteries but that build up will actually decrease the efficiency the batteries the generator during an equalization cycle will actually fire up and run this charge up into 29 and 30 volts what that does is it creates little micro vibrations that knock off that mineralization and so that generator cycling of the the equalization is really important to keep these batteries healthy you can actually get a little equalization module that would go on the wall with this that would kind of pulse a charge to there but the generator can do it’s so much more powerfully that that’s very important you’ll also notice out here I’ve got a little Briggs and Stratton gas generator the the main generates propane by the way a propane company come out and fill a tank here’s a little gas generator though if something were to ever happen and we were to just say that that main generator would break down which has happened in the past we could plug that generator into this inverter and it would run the house so we actually have a backup for our backup and obviously I use that generator for construction projects and other things okay like and subscribe the videos ask questions in the comments let me know what you think. first seen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohg2E884zHs.  Off-Grid Living – Backup Generators
